Hartwig knowledge for the soul Ten Commandments of CNC machine care Thou shalt check oil levels-headstock, hydraulic, way lube, etc. (Do this every day, not just when the inspiration strikes.) •1. Thou shalt not ignore fluids on the floor. (Leaks spell potential downtime.) •2. Thou shalt familiarize thyself with the machines' documentation. (Good, useable information is provided with machines. Knowing where to find it pays off.) •3. Thou shalt not crash the machine. (Usually, crashes do more damage than is readily apparent. Today's and tomorrow's problems frequently are rooted in yesterday's crash.) •4. Thou shalt have thy machine on a regular preventative maintenance schedule. (It's a proven fact that regular maintenance increases machine uptime.) •5. Thou shalt not let chips build up on slide covers. (Chip buildup here eats wipers, bends guarding, inhibits movement, destroys belts, and does other damage.) •6. Thou shalt train machine operators to keep a sharp eye and ear out for anything out of the ordinary. (Alerting someone early about problems can prevent costly repairs later.) •7. Thou shalt not leave panels and doors open while CNC machine is in operation. (Open doors and panels can be dangerous and contaminate electronic systems and shorten their life.) •8. Thou shalt keep a backup of part programs. (Human error and electronic failures can cause stored data to be lost. Having a backup can save hours of rewrite and prove out.) •9. Thou shalt keep a backup of part programs. (Human error and electronic failures can cause stored data to be lost. Having a backup can save hours of rewrite and prove out.) 10. Thou shalt not wait until the machine stops running to call for service. (Putting off repairs can lead to higher-than-necessary costs.) |
