Automation creates fast growth
CMP needed to increase production capacity on their replacement compressor piston products. Ken Kyger, the CMP manufacturing manager was originally looking for a couple of turning centers and vertical machining centers for a production cell. The Hartwig Inc. solution was to partner with Gosiger Automation to provide a turnkey process on an Okuma LT300MY turning center with two turrets, live tool capability, sub-spindle and automation. The Hartwig concept was to finish the part complete on one machine and use a small robot and automatic part feeder to load and unload the turning center. Ken Kyger's original response to Hartwig's solution was that we would not be able to attain the tolerance and finish requirements necessary and still meet production needs with one machine. Ken was reluctant but we finally won his confidence and the project. It is now a year and a half later and according to Ken he is not only making parts at least twice as fast on the LT300MY but he is also making a better part. "Hartwig's innovative solution was definitely what we needed here at CMP. Hartwig is on the top of our list for future machine tool needs and there will definitely be more automation in our future."
